It’s official: New affordable housing is coming soon to SE Powell Blvd thanks to Portland’s Housing Bond

New affordable housing is coming to Southeast Portland thanks to Portland’s Housing Bond. The Portland Housing Bureau recently announced plans to build homes for Portland families in need of stable housing on a site we purchased in the Creston-Kenilworth neighborhood – an area where residents are at risk from rising rents.

The new homes will be built at the site of the former Safari Club at 3000 SE Powell Blvd. We’re starting the design process immediately, with construction expected to begin in early 2019.

“The bond gives us the resources to build and preserve an additional 1,300 units of affordable housing in Portland,” said Mayor Ted Wheeler. “Our strategic framework focuses on creating housing opportunities for families and individuals impacted by racism, housing discrimination, homelessness, and displacement.”

With easy access to education, transportation, economic opportunity, green spaces and other community amenities, the site aligns with the community’s priorities for bond-funded housing and ensures that future residents will have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.

As we work to create and preserve affordable housing throughout Portland, we’re seeking more opportunities to acquire and develop land and existing buildings. Property owners, property representatives and developers can learn more in our Request for Interest (RFI).
