Introducing: Hayu Tilixam

The Native American Youth and Family Center (NAYA) has unveiled a new name and building design for its NE Prescott Street housing development, now known as Hayu Tilixam.

Chinook for “Many Nations,” the name Hayu Tilixam reflects a spirit of inclusion, and the diversity of Portland's Native community, which represents tribal affiliations from 380 tribes nationally. The project was designed to respond to the need for culturally-specific support services, as Native Americans are disproportionately represented among Portland's homeless population. Resident services will be provided by NARA, and the building includes nine Permanent Supportive Housing units. It is the third in a trio of affordable housing developments co-developed by NAYA and Community Development Partners (CDP) that are designed to serve Portland's Native American community.

Carleton Hart Architecture, with support from Native-owned 7 Directions Architects/Planners, have developed the building design around both Native art and cultural symbols, as well as trauma-informed design principles. These features include exterior facade patterning influenced by traditional basket weave patterns, natural materials, special considerations for sightlines and noise impacts, and ample community and gathering spaces for residents. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2021.
