September Newsletter: Bond Projects Continue Pushing Past Goals

September 2020 Newsletter

Dear Fellow Portlanders,

Mayor Ted Wheeler

As we continue to face unprecedented challenges in our city and across the nation, one simple thing remains true: safe, affordable housing is critical for a healthy, resilient community. Portlanders know this. It’s thanks to these shared values, rooted in the well-being of our neighbors and our responsibility to one another, that you stepped forward to support the first general obligation bond for affordable housing in 2016. With 10 new Bond projects now underway, the foresight of creating stable, dedicated funding for affordable housing is paying off for Portland.

In the last newsletter, I shared about the expansion of the SE 30th and Powell project. I’m pleased to follow that up with news of another Bond project adding more units to its building plans. Continue reading below to learn more about expanded development plans for the Anna Mann House. Altogether, the units we’ve added to development plans this year means there are now 1,494 units of Bond housing open or in development throughout our city—enough housing for approximately 3,076 people.

Not only are we keeping our promise to voters by continuing to push past our original production goal, but we are keeping our promises to Portland families and to our most vulnerable neighbors: 689 of these homes include two or more bedrooms to serve families with children and 622 will serve extremely-low income households, including those experiencing homelessness, seniors on fixed incomes, and Veterans.

These achievements are all of ours together. In these trying times, Portland’s Housing Bond reminds us what we can accomplish when we stand together and imagine a better future for our friends, neighbors, community, and the city we love.

Sincerely,

Mayor Wheeler letter signature.png
